The Do's & Don'ts of Skincare

Welcome back everybody!

Today were are going to discuss a wide variety of things that you should be doing related to your skincare, as well as things that you should NOT be doing. Whether it is unrealistic expectations, or the amount of times you think you should be exfoliating your skin. I am going to try to cover all the bases with these Do’s & Don’ts of skincare. It’s time to jump in!

Do’s

DO invest in good, quality skincare products

  • You can’t expect to see results with a cheap drugstore brand, compared to a more expensive brand that is medical grade. I do want to point out, that sometimes, higher price doesn’t necessarily mean better. You can find some VERY expensive brands at Sephora or Shoppers, and honestly, they aren’t going to do much for your skin. They may be very luxurious, but sometimes you are just paying more because of the name on the bottle. Just be aware and do your research or ask you aesthetician!

DO wash your face TWICE a day

  • Pretty self-explanatory, wash your face in the morning, and at night. Do not wash your face before you go to the gym or before you have a shower, you are just going to waste your product.

DO double cleanse at night

  • This is a great step to be doing, especially for my makeup lovers. Use a cleansing oil to get rid and melt off all your makeup and built up dirt and debris. Follow up with your gel or cream-based cleanser. This allows for your more active cleanser to penetrate deeper into your skin and be more effective. I personally love the Universal Cleansing Oil by Dermaquest (if you want to know more about this product contact me).

DO exfoliate 1-2x a week

  • Exfoliating is key, and so important for healthy skin. It helps to slough off dead skin cells, allowing for your more advanced products to penetrate deeper and be more effective. As well as it helps with texture and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

DO wash your hands before you wash/touch your face

  • I do have to mention this, because people still are not aware. You should definitely be washing your hands before you cleanse your face, because you never know what’s on your hands. You definitely don’t want the bacteria and germs on your skin, as this will cause breakouts!

DO wash your makeup off at the end of the day or after a night out

  • You don’t want your makeup sitting and soaking into your skin and clogging your pores. This will lead to breakouts. This brings us back to double cleansing to make sure all your makeup is properly removed. I know it can be difficult to remember if you are tired or had a busy night, but if you try and get into the routine of it, it will become second nature. Overall it is best for your skin.

DO consult your aesthetician about what products you should be using

  • It’s easy to get caught up with what celebrities recommend, or what your friends and family use. What are the chances half of the proactiv celebrities actually use their products? Highly unlikely. Please consult your aesthetician or dermatologist, as they are educated in this field. This is their passion and good aestheticians truly have your best interest in mind. Take your time to research and find a good aesthetician so that they can help you.

DO get skin treatments every 4-6 weeks

  • Did you know your skin renews itself every 28 days (depending on your age, older skin takes longer to renew)? It is key to treat the new skin. It is important for maintenance as well as if you have a skin concern, that needs to be treated with more advanced products or machines regularly to stay on top of it.

DO use at home skin care routine

  • If you want to truly see a difference in your skin, home care is the key. It’s great to come in for more advanced skin care treatments, but you can’t just get one facial and expect to see results. It is essential to be cleansing, hydrating and using your corrective serums every day, so that you can truly reach your skin goals!

DO give your skin time to reach your skin goals

  • Speaking of skin goals, patience is key. I totally understand the frustration of not seeing results right away. It can be demoralizing. Nothing in life happens overnight (unless you are lucky enough to win a lottery). It truly takes time and patience to start seeing a change in your skin. It is important to keep up with your recommend skincare routine, suggested by your aesthetician. I promise, you will see results in the end.

DON’TS

DON’T exfoliate every day

  • Exfoliating every day is going to make my skin soft and supple and look amazing right? Unfortunately, that is wrong. Over exfoliating your skin actually leads to damaged skin causing you even more problems, and we all don’t want that.

DON’T apply regular moisturizer under and around your eyes

  • I know, I know. It might seem like a good idea to you, as well as a cheaper solution. But trust me, don’t do it. When you apply your moisturizer under your eyes, it leads to milia (hard beady white bumps). Why does this happen? Well, the under eye area is a very thin, delicate area. When you apply your thick hydrating moisturizer, it just sits and doesn’t get absorbed. This is because the moisturizer’s molecules are way too large to be absorbed under your eyes. That’s why eye cream was invented. The molecules in eye cream are much smaller and easier for your under eye area to absorb. Start investing in a good eye cream!

DON’T apply SPF once and think you are set for the day

  • There are wayyy too many people out there that still don’t know this. But that is okay, we can still try our best to educate. SPF (sunscreen) is key to protecting your skin from the sun and its UV rays. Applying once in the morning doesn’t suffice, since it can easily come off your face within a couple hours. Whether it is from sweat, water, touching your face etc. Reapply every 2hrs to get optimal protection from UV rays.

DON’T pick at your skin

  • Please, I actually know how hard this is. You see a bump, a white head or blackhead. All you want to do is get rid of it. Leave this to the professionals. You don’t want to damage your skin causing scars and hyperpigmentation from improper extractions.

DON’T lean and and touch your skin all the time

  • Are your hands clean 24/7? Most likely not, therefore dirt and bacteria are lurking on them, therefore being transported to your face when you touch it. This will lead to breakouts! Try to avoid doing this as much as possible. Also, if you are constantly lean on your skin, you will cause wrinkles.

DON’T wash your skin more than twice a day

  • Common thought with acenic clients is that the more they wash their face, the quicker all the acne will go away. Makes sense, right? Its incorrect though. All you are doing is stripping your skin of its natural moisture, therefore causing your skin to over produce oil. You are also just wasting your product, since it’s not necessary

DON’T guess the type of products you should be applying to your skin

  • I have many clients who think they have acenic skin, but all they have are a few breakouts. A lot of people don’t know their skin type, or what products they ACTUALLY need. This is where your aesthetician comes in. He/she will be able to help you determine what will be best for your skin, and the type of products you need to reach your skin goals.

DON’T expect results without the combination of a home care routine, and regular skin care treatments

  • It is very important to not only be having regular skin treatments with your aesthetician, but they will also advise that in between treatments you should have a skin routine at home. By doing this, you will optimize your treatments you receive. It is also the key to seeing results. Although it’s great to have a home care routine, you do need to go in and have your facials/chemical peels/microdermabrasion, etc regularly. If you have a major concern like anti-aging or acne, you have to get those treatments that are going to go deeper into your skin and target those issues.

DON’T give up on homecare and treatments because you aren’t seeing results right away

  • To see results, it takes time. Nothing will happen overnight; the key is patience and consistency.

DON’T skip applying moisturizer because you have oily or acenic skin.

  • I see a lot of people do this, and I’ll explain why you don’t want to do this. Yes, your skin may be oily, but it still needs to be hydrated. If you continuously clean and strip the natural oils on your skin, your body will then produce more oils to try and compensate for the lack of moisture on the skin. So, no matter your skin type, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

Don’t use a body scrub on your face

  • This sounds like a good idea in theory to some people possibly, it’s a terrible idea. The skin on our body is a lot thicker and can handle a more intense scrub. Our faces, cannot. Body scrubs are too harsh for our delicate faces, and you will cause damage if you use it!

That is the end of my Do’s/Don’ts of skincare. There are plenty more I can talk about, but we would be here for a while. Maybe in the future I can do a part two if you guys enjoyed this! Thank you again to my beautiful clients, family and friends who continue to support my dream and my passion. I can’t believe I’ve been open for just over 6 months now.
